Serious Injury Associate

Birmingham – £50,000 - £60,000

Serious Injury Associate

West Midlands - £60,000 DOE + Quarterly Bonus Hybrid Working - No Billing Targets - Small Caseloads

Feeling stretched between too many files, billing pressure, and not having enough time to do serious injury work properly?

This role is for a serious injury solicitor who wants time to think, time to prepare, and time for clients, without worrying about billing targets or unmanageable caseloads.

My client is a well-established, specialist, serious injury law firm and you will be joining their lean, growing Midlands-based team that was recently set us and is expanding carefully. With the focus on high-quality serious injury work well and sustainably.

What you'll actually do

You won't be buried in volume or stuck on the edges of cases. Instead, you will:
  • Run your own serious injury caseload (typically 8-12 files) so you stay in control of your work
  • Lead on complex, high-value claims, not just assist in the background
  • Work closely on catastrophic injury cases, contributing meaningfully alongside Partners and Senior Associates
  • Hell develop and manage a small group of Trainees and Paralegals
  • Build long-term client relationships, with the time to focus on outcomes

Why this role works (and what it means for you)
  • No billing targets → You can focus on quality advocacy and client care, not just survival or hitting numbers.
  • Small, controlled caseloads → You have the headspace to prepare cases properly and avoid constant firefighting.
  • Hybrid and flexible working → You organise your week around clients and life
  • A growing team, not a finished hierarchy → Your contribution is visible, and there's genuine scope to step up as the department expands.
  • People-first culture (Gold Investors in People) → Development, wellbeing, and retention are taken seriously, not just talked about.

The package
  • £60,000 salary (DOE)
  • Quarterly profit-share bonus
  • 25 days' holiday + bank holidays
  • Enhanced sick pay
  • Healthcare plan
  • 4x death in service

This role is a strong fit if you:
  • Are a qualified solicitor with 4-8 years' PQE in serious injury
  • Experience developing junior team members
  • Enjoy being hands-on with your own cases and complex work
  • Care about doing the job properly, not just coping with volume
  • Want a role you can stay in and grow with, not escape from in 12 months

If you're feeling stretched by targets or volume and want to get back to serious injury work done the right way, this is worth a conversation.

Gareth Hibbert is a Senior Recruitment Consultant at Douglas Scott Legal Recruitment, having been with the company for over two years. On a personal note, he is looking to move house to something a bit bigger with a garage so he can tinker. After a busy day, Gareth doesn't get much time to unwind with a 2-year-old, but his unwinding comes during the tram journey home. He loves spending quality time with his family, as nothing beats that. If he weren't in recruitment, Gareth would likely pursue a career in microbiology, particularly focusing on soil, though he’s glad he’s not, as he thinks he might not handle all the excitement!
